A Manger Moment Day 23

A Manger Moment

Isaiah 9:6-7
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.”

(This entry is inspired by the book of Isaiah and the song “Names”-Elevation Worship)

This time of year, we often see this verse in scripture and admire how poetic it is. We sing songs that point out this message, see it throughout social media, and even have decor in our homes with it on display. The prophet Isaiah spoke these words hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus. He spoke it as He received it from The Father, and indeed it came to pass.

There’s a modern Christmas song that comes to mind when I read this scripture (referenced above) and it truly became an eye opener that makes me stop and really ponder on the names of Jesus, and what this verse tells us about who He is. It truly prepares my heart for this season as it shifts my mind to gratitude. I challenge you to do the same.

“And He will be called Wonderful Counselor”
Isaiah’s listeners needed a wonderful counselor and so do we.

“Mighty God”
Jesus wants to give His power to those who put their trust in Him. Nothing is beyond the one who defeated death, hell, and the grave.

“Everlasting Father”
For you, the title “father” carries weight that is anchored down by either a loving father who protected us or another figure who failed at this role. But here, Isaiah points straight to the consistent, everlasting, comforting, Heavenly father.

“Prince of Peace”
As we long for peace in the most chaotic moments and places, He is that calm that we crave. He brings silence to the loudest voices in our minds, and stills the storm.

“The government will be on His shoulders”
(I feel like I should put that in bold in 2023.)
The people longed for a king, but they were gifted something far greater. Setting His crown and robe aside, he became a servant leader. Isaiah didn’t prophesy that the government would be His footstool, but that it would “rest on His shoulders”. He chose to bear the burdens of His authority and give rest to the weary.

You don’t have to carry your own burdens this Christmas, or ever truly. He is able. He is able to stand tall under the weight of the world. He is able to carry the load of all that threatens to crush us.

Rest in Him this Christmas.

“Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
