A Manger Moment

“Rejoice”
“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. ” Matthew 2:10-12 NKJV
Rejoice in the original Greek text is chairó (xaipw) meaning to be glad. The root of the word is xar- “favorably disposed, leaning towards” and correlates with the words xáris-“grace” and xará- “joy”, with a literal meaning to experience God’s grace, be conscious or glad/joyful for His grace.
This gives such a greater meaning to rejoicing in the Lord, especially in this season of celebrating and rejoicing in His birth. We are not just to be glad or show joy, but to lean in and experience God’s grace and delight in the joy of it.
The wise men’s position and response to arriving to the new born King was rejoicing, leaning in and allowing themselves to be favorably disposed to God’s grace. By being in His presence and seeing Him, their hearts were overwhelmed with joy and desire to do nothing more than to bow and give him the honor and worship that only He deserves. Only after they worshipped did they present their gifts to Him. He desires us to have a heart opened to rejoicing in the Lord and worshipping Him for who He is just as the wise men did when they came into the presence of the King of Kings.
“Heavenly Father, help us to slow our season and focus on rejoicing in your presence and allowing ourselves to be favorably disposed to your grace. Let this season be one of celebrating You and your provision of grace and mercy in Jesus. Allow us to lean in closer to you and experience your grace and delight in it. We thank you for your son Jesus and the salvation we find in Him. Let our hearts be in a position of worship and adoration of you, in Jesus name, Amen.”
