A Manger Moment
The Christmas Story
In pondering the Christmas story, why did God choose to reveal Himself to mankind as a human in the person of Jesus? Could not God have revealed Himself in any form or fashion He so desired? After all, is He not Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent? I believe the answer is one of legality.
Let us begin our search in Gen 1:26. "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and ‘let them’ have dominion over ..." God excluded Himself of dominion (direct authority and power) on earth when He said "let them". Had God said “let us" have dominion, He would have included Himself along with mankind (co-regent) to have dominion (legal authority and power) on planet earth.
Therefore, the only entity that could have legal dominion on earth was a human (a spirit living in a physical body). Since God is a Spirit with no physical body, this disqualified Him from directly intervening into the affairs of mankind. God will not violate His Word! During Old Testament times, God had to have a person (spirit in a physical body) to work through, in order for His will to be implemented on earth.
As the result of the birth of Jesus, (God's Spirit living in a physical body) Jesus could exercise legal authority and power on earth.
This is why Jesus reveals in His Word that He has legal authority and power on earth to execute judgment, and forgive sins, not because He was the Son of God but because He was the Son of Man. (John 5:27; Matt. 9:6;)
Therefore:
Jesus---the Man
Made Christ---the God
Legal on Earth
By the power of incarnation, God would circumvent His own law. Therefore God could accomplish His will on earth through the person of JESUS!
