Day 20

Earnest Prayer

James 5:13-16 New Living Translation (NLT)

The Power of Prayer
13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. 14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
Do you believe that prayer matters, that prayer works, that because of your prayers things can change?  Our devotion today tells us that the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.

Righteous person - if you have confessed your sins to God and asked Jesus to be the Lord of your life then you are "Made Right" with God through the sacrifice of Jesus.  You are righteous because of what Jesus did for you.  In other words you are in "right standing" with God because of Christ.

People pray all day to other gods and expect results however their prayers are like "sounding brass".  They make a lot of noise but have no substance.  Because the one they are praying to does not exist.  However, when we pray, the maker of Heaven and Earth listens.  He hear our cry and will answer.

So be "earnest" in your prayer.

The image given is of focused and passionate prayer-coming to God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind, and saying, “God, I mean business! I want what I'm asking of You; I'm not just going through the motions.”
